Was halten Sie von den Einschränkungen?

Wovor fürchten Sie sich im Moment?
- Ich habe Angst, mir den Virus einzufangen, weil die Menschen die Einschränkungen nicht ernst nehmen. Die Menschen versammeln sich immer noch in ihren Häusern und tragen in der Öffentlichkeit keine Masken. Sie nehmen diese Pandemie nicht ernst und gefährden alle anderen.

An interview with Margaret Nakato from Uganda. She works there at the Katosi Women Development Trust and tells us about the current situation in Uganda during the pandemic.
How is the situation in Uganda because of Covid-19 right now?
- As of 1st June 2020, there are 413 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Uganda. The situation is worsening because of the truck drivers that are transporting goods into Uganda from the neighbouring countries
- The relief food that was issues for vulnerable people has run out as of 1st June 2020. Some communities have still not received any relief food especially the rural communities.
What precautions did your government put in place?
- Government put the country on lock down
- Public transport was stopped with the exception of those with private cars. They can now move.
- Gatherings of more than 10 people were banned. Including religious gatherings and private functions
- Everyone is supposed to wear a mask at all times especially when interacting with other people.
- Most businesses were closed with the exception of essential workers
Do people in your surroundings conform to the regulations?
- People are not taking precautions seriously as gatherings are being seen in my surroundings.
- People are also not wearing masks.
- People are using private cars to run small transport rings as public transport is still halted yet people want to work
How is social life restricted by the precautions?
- All entertainment and lifestyle places were closed until futher notice
- Religious gatherings were also banned.
How do you feel about the restrictions?
- The restrictions are necessary for survival. However, the uganda police is using these restrictions violently against the people.
What are you afraid of right now?
- I am afraid of catching the virus because people are not taking the restrictions seriously. People are still gathering in their houses and not wearing masks in public. They are not taking this pandemic seriously and putting everyone else at risk.
- I’m also afraid of the economic situation that we are going to be enduring. The economies are going to crash and there is no contingency plan from our governments.
In your opinion, did your government react properly?
- Yes, the government reacted in the right way
Do you feel well enough informed about the virus and the precautions?
- Yes, I do
Where do you get information from (which media, specific resources)?
- I get it from Ministry of Health website in Uganda, Twitter, World Health Organisation website
How do the regulations by the government affect your work as an organisation?
- The field activities have been put on hold like group meetings and trainings
- The staff have not been able to come to office as well as some live far and have no private cars. Work is slow because of poor coordination as the internet is slow for those working from home and have no access to the server
How are you dealing with the restrictions as an organisation?
- We are wearing masks in the office
How is your work with partner organisations for specific projects affected?
- The planned projects had to be halted as most activities are field related
Do you have Covid-19 specific projects to inform and/or help the women or communities?
- Yes
I have read that domestic violence is getting more because of the lockdown. Do you notice anything about it from the women you are working with?
- We do not have access to any reports about domestic violence from the community

- A partir del 1 de junio de 2020, hay 413 casos confirmados de Covid-19 en Uganda. La situación está empeorando debido a los camioneros que están transportando mercancías a Uganda desde los países vecinos

¿Qué opina de las restricciones?
- Las restricciones son necesarias para la supervivencia. Sin embargo, la policía de Uganda está usando estas restricciones violentamente contra la gente.
¿De qué tiene miedo ahora mismo?
- Tengo miedo de contraer el virus porque la gente no se toma las restricciones en serio. La gente sigue reuniéndose en sus casas y no usan máscaras en público. No están tomando esta pandemia en serio y poniendo a todos los demás en riesgo.
- También tengo miedo de la situación económica que vamos a soportar. Las economías se van a desplomar y no hay ningún plan de contingencia de nuestros gobiernos.
